What is the World Wide Web?

The World Wide Web is a system of interlinked hypertext documents accessed via the Internet.
"HyperText is a way to link and access information of various kinds as a web of nodes in which the user can browse at will. It provides a single user-interface to large classes of information (reports, notes, data-bases, computer documentation and on-line help). We propose a simple scheme incorporating servers already available at CERN... A program which provides access to the hypertext world we call a browser... "
Tim Berners-Lee , R. Cailliau. 12 November 1990, CERN [
HyperText is a way to link and access information of various kinds as a web of nodes in which the user can browse at will.

This innovation provided a progression to the traditional approach of paper text whose scope was limited to the information provided in the particular text.  The World Wide Web provided a means to follow trains of thought in unexpected directions and paths of the users particular interest, being able to return to the original point if need be

The World Wide Web is a system of Internet servers that support specially formatted documents. The documents are formatted in a markup language called HTML (HyperText Markup Language) that supports links to other documents, as well as graphics, audio, and video files. This means you can jump from one document to another by clicking on links.  Web browsers are the applications that make it easy to access the World Wide Web, the most popular being Firefox and Internet Explorer.

As well as being able to provide access to a wealth of information.  The world wide web has changed how people communicate.  People are interlinked and interacting with engaging content in a conversational and participatory manner via the Internet through applications like Facebook, Twitter and Blogging.

What is the internet - part 2

What is your earliest memory of using the Internet? How does it compare with your online experiences now?

My earliest memory of the internet is trying to download music through Napster in about 1997.  I remember is was really exciting and frustrating.  Exciting because I could save my money by downloading it and it was easily accessible.  Frustrating because it was dial up internet and if someone rang or if someone picked up the phone in another room it would stop downloading and I would have to start downloading it from the beginning again... raah!
Nowadays, the process of downloading music is soooo much faster and efficient.   Not only music but movies and tv shows.   Online stores like iTunes have made purchasing music cheaper and have made CD's pretty much redundant with advent of MP3 players..
There is no change in the argument about illegally downloading content.  Record companies have been suing people for downloading music for a while now.   I remember back in the late 90's Lars from Metallica kicking off about it and suing Napster for lost royalties.
There is some change in that a few musical artists (Oasis, Radiohead) are releasing their new music for free on their websites.

What is the internet?

Its interesting readng about the how the internet was initially conceived, I've never looked into it before.

I've never thought of the internet and the World Wide Web as separate.  To me 'going on the internet' was one and the same as 'going on the World Wide Web.  So I've been wrapping my head around 'what is the internet' specifically.  And its been sending me a bit boggle eyed.  The internet is the infrastructure by which different applications can be delivered to us on our PC's or Macs.

The internet is an system of interconnected computers and networks by which information is sent and received.  A network of networks in which users at any one computer can, if they have permission, get information from any other computer, and also talk directly to users at other computers.  The World Wide Web  is the most common use of the internet,
