What is the internet?

Its interesting readng about the how the internet was initially conceived, I've never looked into it before.

I've never thought of the internet and the World Wide Web as separate.  To me 'going on the internet' was one and the same as 'going on the World Wide Web.  So I've been wrapping my head around 'what is the internet' specifically.  And its been sending me a bit boggle eyed.  The internet is the infrastructure by which different applications can be delivered to us on our PC's or Macs.

The internet is an system of interconnected computers and networks by which information is sent and received.  A network of networks in which users at any one computer can, if they have permission, get information from any other computer, and also talk directly to users at other computers.  The World Wide Web  is the most common use of the internet,

What is the internet used for besides the World Wide Web ?
  • Email.
  • Usenet newsgroup.
  • FTP, or file transfer protocol.
  • Instant messaging programs.
  • Online gaming.
The most popular actions of the Internet are,
  • To send email.
  • To view web sites. (via the WWW)
  • To download files such as mp3 and images.
  • To chat with people live online.
  • To post messages on newsgroups and forums.
  • To play mulitplayer games online.
  • To watch movies and tv porgrams.
  • To chat and view on webcams.
